Innovations in entrepreneurial ecosystems

2019-12-20
The new special issue (vol. 13, No. 4) focuses on various factors’ (and their interaction’s) impact on innovation in entrepreneurial ecosystems.

The paper by Julia Trabskaja and Tõnis Mets “Ecosystem as the Source of Entrepreneurial Opportunities” analyses the links between entrepreneurial ecosystems and emergence of new business opportunities in the course of innovation activities, using the ICT industry as an example. The state and businesses make the biggest contribution to development of entrepreneurial ecosystems, relevant structural conditions, and human capital. As the ecosystem matures, venture funding increases. The authors present the Estonian case study.

The paper “Entrepreneurial Innovations in Countries at Different Stages of Development” offers comparative analysis of entrepreneurial ecosystems in a number of countries. The authors, Éva Komlósi, Balázs Páger, and Gábor Márkus, consider the correlation between countries’ innovation potential and various components of their entrepreneurial ecosystems. The level of technological advancement correlates with the overall Global Entrepreneurship Index and economic development. A clear trend was revealed: against the background of growing foreign direct investments, international investors play a key role in the development of local entrepreneurial ecosystems in transition countries.

The study by Alise Mactama and Arnis Sauka “Developing Local Entrepreneurship Ecosystems by Foreign Investment” analyses factors affecting perception of entrepreneurial ecosystems by foreign investors. Understanding this correlation will help develop targeted initiatives to optimise the local entrepreneurial environment, and promote foreign investments.

Alexander Chepurenko, Maria Kristalova, and Michael Wyrwich analysed institutional conditions for promoting universities’ research and entrepreneurial activities in the context of transition to market economy. The paper “Historical and Institutional Determinants of Universities’ Role in Fostering Entrepreneurship” focuses on the “path dependence” effect, and the mechanisms for regulating universities’ interaction with other participants of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This approach allowed to assess universities’ potential, along with the impact of historical development paths on the current structural conditions and specific features of entrepreneurial ecosystems.

How entrepreneurial education and relevant skills affect students’ willingness to start own businesses? Marina Solesvik and Paul Westhead tried to answer this question in their paper “Fostering of Entrepreneurship Competencies and Entrepreneurial Intentions in a Weak Ecosystem”. The strength of entrepreneurial intentions is not significantly affected by having such skills as awareness of potential opportunities, computer literacy, and networking.

The publication by Margarita Zobnina, Anatoly Korotkov, and Aleksandr Rozhkov “Structure, Challenges and Opportunities for Development of Entrepreneurial Education in Russian Universities” is devoted to designing special approaches to education and training to promote emergence of new companies, technology commercialisation, entrepreneurial mentality, and development of relevant skills. If the training is tailored to students’ own projects and encourages them to create start-up companies, the academic environment, faculty members’ entrepreneurial experience, and course types cease to play crucial roles in emergence and development of university entrepreneurial ecosystem.
